For my Bachelor's thesis, I examined how designers could use the vast amount of digital images available online as a resource for documentary work. I chose the fast food franchise McDonald's as my thematic focus. This brand has a global presence and is known by almost everyone; it also polarises opinion like few other companies. I collected user images and comments relating to McDonald's restaurants worldwide from review platforms such as TripAdvisor and Google Maps, and assembled them in a publication. Through this, various facets of the McDonald's phenomenon are highlighted, revealing associated absurdities and contradictions. The book's objective is also to stimulate reflection and conversation about the concept of a photograph's documentary significance.
